360 controller for PC
okay, so I'm really getting into PC FPS....and I find that the keyboard can get awkward quite fast. I've researched, and according to some reviews and gamestop employees....a regular 360 corded controller should connect via USB and I should be able to download the drivers from Microsoft for free......but I'm curious....does anyone have any experience with this?

i have tried it but it just doesnt work, plus, if you do get the controller and play with it, you will realize how awkward it is using the controller.
Re: 360 controller for PC
You know, i buy FPS for the PC for one single reason: mouse and keyboard.
Not only you get to aim better and with more precision due to the mouse as you have some kind of extra realism (IMO).
But i know what you mean, the keyboard CAN be a little awkward to play with, but most FPS have lots of actions, normally each one with its own key, thus making the controller hard to use because it would need some key combinations that really don't help when you under fire.
Another thing to have in count is that the K&M controls are almost the same most of the times (at least the basics), while it varies a lot more with a controller.
Ultimately, some PC games don't have controller support. Of course you can use a program like XPadder to configure your controller, but believe me, i tried it once and it just didn't work well.
My advice is to stick with K&M and try to get used to it. If it doesn't work in two or three hours, just use a controller BUT train with the K&M from time to time.
Note: if you want a good controller for the PC, don't use the X360 one!!
Seriously, I'd recommend you to go with logitech.
